Hello to all who may read this.
Today marks the ten year anniversary of the creation of this website. While it may be largely out of commission at this point, it is still important to remember the significance of Dumb Farks and to cherish what this site has accomplished in the past. Dumb Farks has been so many things for many different people, and I am incredibly happy with the impact that the site has made to its members.
To start, a short history lesson that all Farkans probably know to at least a small extent. The first "Spacecowgirl" website was created by user Earthfire a couple years before Dumb Farks, and was initially devoted to Teen Titans and later devoted to the now-highly obscure Rave Master. After the site was trolled and modified, Proboards saw fit to remove the site from existence. As a result, on August 2, 2005, I created the "Spacecowgirl2" Proboards domain (with the obsolete randomly-generated number 59 in the URL). This site initially served as a replacement for Rsve Fandom, and the site was designed to replicate that. This, however, quickly became uninteresting, and there was a desire for change. After a couple admins and I took to instant messenger to think of changes, another user called us "a bunch of dumb fucks" (I have no clue if this was jokingly or not, nor does it matter anymore ). This became an inspiration for the site name, and Dumb Farks was created shortly after. Thus began a cycle of content that peaked during 2006-07 and remained steady until about 2010. The content was original, bizarre, and, at times, just plain dumb.
Dumb Farks has been many things to many individuals over the years. Dumb Farks has been a place where the insane and unusual thoughts of many were splattered into text on the boards. Some of these thoughts were elaborately crafted in role-playing stories, some were crafted in passionate (and often edgy) opinions posted on respective boards, and other craziness was spewed into the Spam section (okay, let's be honest, most of it was). I can happily say that I can look back at some of these threads and still get a pretty good laugh.
Dumb Farks has also been an inspiring source of creativity. The DFPDC (Dumb Farks Program Development Center) generated a variety of different short films, pieces of artwork, and even asmall portion of a game! This content served as a massive source of entertainment (along with the aforementioned crazy opinions), and some content even went on to gain a pretty decent following outside of DF. I'll even go as far as saying that these productions planted the seeds for a few different Farkans to later achieve a higher education on making nifty productions. In addition to the works of the DFPDC, many other users created their own pieces of work and shared it on one of the "Creativity" boards on the site. It seemed like everyone on the site had something to contribute, and this was an immensely awesome site to see!
Lastly (and perhaps most importantly), Dumb Farks was an incredible vessel when it came to facilitating friendships. During DF's time of prominence, the five main administrators of the site achieved an excellent degree of camaraderie, and the existence of this site is a major reason for why the early years of our collective friendship are so incredibly sacred. For those who do not know, a few months after this site was created, the five admins responsible for maintaining this site all started hitting it off, and bonding and "hanging out" would become a regular occurrence, and this alliance was a force to be reckoned with (you know, if you put aside a few little incidents here and there). We were an incomparable unit, and while we helped improve the site, the site helped in improving our friendship. To me, this is the greatest legacy of Dumb Farks, and while it is somewhat of a ghost town now, I will never forget how it stuck us all together and how it not only made coming of age something bearable, but also something to be mightily enjoyed.
It is hard to believe that this site has now existed for ten years. Moving forward, I certainly do not imagine the site getting any significant attention anymore. The existence of social media has rendered forums as a thing of the past, and while this is sad in some ways, I most certainly accept things for what they are now, and I can say with confidence that this website has served its purpose. Do not let this discourage you from making the occasional post, however! Given the amazing milestone achieved by the site, feel free to share your favorite memories of the site, or what Dumb Farks means to you. Additionally, if you ever feel like sharing your thoughts on the site for old times' sake, DF will always be here for you to share (until Proboards wipes it out of existence, likely without warning). Someone else is bound to see your thoughts eventually (likely out of nostalgic curiosity). Most of all, take it all in and celebrate what we have all done while flying the DF flag! The site's motto is "Among the Web's Epic Forums," and to me, Dumb Farks backed up that mantra many, many times.
((Holy smokes, writing that made me feel like Adult Gordie from Stand by Me. You know, when it cuts to him writing the story on that super-old computer? Yeah, like that.))
