I had the pleasure of expierencing this franchise for the first time over the course of a year and all I have to say is IT FUCKING KICKS SOOOO MUCH ASS!!! Hands down the best story I have ever seen in a series and everything else about it was just great.
Any other thoughts?

We've never had a Metal Gear thread other than Peace Walker?
It truly is one of the best game series out there. The immense amount of story mixed with really fun gameplay and a wonderful soundtrack...it's just such a winning formula for a game series.

I purchased the MGS Essentials for $20 at Wal-Mart, whadda deal eh? I only wish that it came with the MGS 3 disc that has Metal Gear 1 and 2. I have a history with this game going from a skeptical "hater" due to pre-conceived notions of overhype to an all out lover of the series and it's story. I have yet to actually play the games but I've seen more than enough to know the Metal Gear Solid series is great.

Yeah...definite mention to Portable Ops and Peace Walker....good games as well. However, if we are talking 1-4, I say my favorite is either 1 or 3. That is subject to change, though, because I typically will remember something from another game and that will influence my list.

I've recently admitted to myself that this series has taken the spot of favorite game series to me. Due to the package that you get with each game, I believe that it has every element the ultimate should have, and so Metal Gear Solid has earned that title.
I think MGS 3 is my favorite of the listed games. The addition of the battery, the breakable suppressor, changing Snake into camouflage, the wide arsenal of guns, and the HUGE implementation of CQC made this game what it is. And it didn't even end there. There were multiple easter eggs, wonderful conversation between characters, and a spectacular premise to MGS3. Where it brought all of this to the table, and very successfully delivered on it, I can honestly say that I believe MGS3 is the pinnacle of the Metal Gear Solid experience.

THat's another big part of the series: new games bring new things. Orville just mentioned what 3 introduced, 1 brought the series into 3D (what was considered 3D at the time), 2 introduced swimming and swordplay, 4 introduced one of my favorite additions to the series in the crouch walk...you could go on and on.

Metal Gear Rising will be the best game in the series.
The question is... Am I serious?

Currently 3 and 4 are tied as my favorite MGS games. What Orville said about 3 is what makes it so good along with the little surprise about the Boss at the end. 4 however just had so much depth to the story not to mention many twists and surprises particilarlly the ending. Something elese about the series I really loved that Orville mentioned is that outside of MGS3 there weren't really any villians which I thought was really cool

Psycho Mantis, Vulcan Raven, Fat Man, etc. are all offended. Interestingly enough, almost nobody in the series is purely good or bad. thinking about it, the only purely good character is The Boss, and the only purely bad character is Liquid Snake. Heck, it could even be argued Liquid wasn't 100% bad. All he wanted was to be free from the curse of Big Boss' genes.

Orville pointed out that Liquid wasn't nessicarily bad he just wanted freedom like you said and it can be argued that Psycho Mantis, Vulcan Raven, wanted to help. Solidus defintily wasn't bad becuase he just wanted to free the country from the Patriots and all the Dead Cell members were gonna help him achieve that. Ocolot for sure wasn't bad because he was just trying to free Big Boss. Therefore the only truly bad characters in the series were Col. Volgan and Zero in my opoinon

Volgin is the only bad guy in my opinion, and a very silly one at that, which is pretty funny. The only purely bad guy is kind of a joke character. The reason I don't think Zero is necessarily a villain either is because he, like Big Boss, was simply trying to interpret the Boss's will. Zero meant no harm either, but he, just like Big Boss, unleashed a whole boatload of trouble.

Idk she's pretty familiar to me, but I think that was just because I liked her accent lol!
Also that's one thing I really like about the series too is that almost all the character are pretty memorable and have a mostly decent, if not than better story behind them. Also like you guys were saying, in other than maybe MGS3 and possibly Peace Walker, there were no, or at least many particularly good guys or bad guys. They were all just people fighting for what they believed in. What also makes the series great is that none of the stories are bad, even the weaker games of the series have an overall great story, at least in my opinion anyways.
Also this is definitely without a doubt one of my favorite series of games, and I'm looking forward to MGS: Lightning Bolt Action.
I think my favorites are between 1 and 3 given that I never actually played 4 I only watched it, which is probably my only reason for saying I enjoyed 3 better. Also Peace Walker is a close runner up mainly because it was pretty fun by itself, but being able to play it with friends just made it that much better!
