It is archaic, indeed. A problem you didn't mention is that presidential candidates will focus more heavily on certain states, such as California, Florida, and Ohio...who cares about Montana, it has only 3 electoral votes. Why would a candidate waste time on the people there? This is another huge problem with the system

I never did understand why the Electoral College was necessary. It in a way negates that whole thing about you know "The People" deciding who their leader is going to be. I really would like to know from someone more informed than myself as to why it's still here.

It would be a hassle to change and it would require politicians to do stuff to change it? It would require a constitutional amendment, and those are a big deal. They take awhile to make, and most politicians probably don't see the change as worth their effort, unfortunately. Also, the electoral college makes it easier for candidates to strategize where to campaign. That's the best explanation I can think of..
