People can do what they want because it's protected as free speech, and I hope TJ makes it clear.
It's funny how Obama said burning the book goes 'against American values'; it reminded me of the time Bush said atheists went 'against American values.'
And here's a typical example of the inevitable Islamic response: "It is the duty of Muslims to react," said Mohammad Mukhtar, a cleric and candidate for the Afghan parliament in the Sept. 18 election. "When their holy book Quran gets burned in public, then there is nothing left. If this happens, I think the first and most important reaction will be that wherever Americans are seen, they will be killed. No matter where they will be in the world they will be killed."
To an extent a double standard still remains... burn a bible or some other book or burn a flag and it's free speech, burn the Koran and it's disrespectful and you're a bigot who doesn't understand anything. Make fun of creationism or atheists or Christians or Scientologists, and it's free speech; make fun of or criticize Islam and it's hate speech and you're ignorant and bigoted. Poor Muslims should quickly pass those laws in the UN to help protect their precious god and continue to rape free speech all over the world.
All I can say is that I don't care what these church is doing. It doesn't matter if they go around saying 9/11 was a blessing or that all Muslims are evil. They can do whatever they want and in this case they most likely shouldn't have even been given attention. If crybabies and apologists can't handle seeing some shit burn, they should just ignore it and continue to live in their blissfully small worlds.
I don't see anyone getting all upset and rioting over the fact that Muslims have already burned several American flags just in response to the possibility of the Koran burning taking place. Man, they are pros at bargaining and peace making. Oh my, I guess it's their precious religion being mocked so they can't help it. Peace be with them.
The deeper problem at hand here and my point is that burning a few books should not create havoc and discord in the first place. Yet, alas, we live in a sad world. If doing something as simple and as stupid as burning some books is enough to cause more suffering, then the problem clearly isn't exclusively the burning of the books. The problem is the message of the book itself, or at least how man currently interprets it. But I know the truest problem is one of man's interpretation, and the proof of this is that the Islamic world was once very open to all and the leader of science and all facets of culture for an extended period of time; today, the Islamic world, though making up roughly 20% of the entire world, hardly contributes anything at all of value to the modern world. Today, the majority of Islamic world is a backwater where oppression and violence are the norms.
People need to start to or learn to ignore things that offend them. Yet people will not learn to ignore such acts, only making things worse. Just think of how much better everyone would be if the majority of the Muslim world had the heart to forgive the act of some idiots burning their holy books, and not decide to enter a mode of rage and make hostilities worse. Yet some of them are blinded by that very book they seek to protect, so it is ironic that it is being destroyed. People most likely wouldn't do such things if others didn't have a horrible reaction. I can only hope this event (and others like the Danish cartoon incident and Draw Muhammad day) causes more people to look at themselves and perhaps consider abandoning such beliefs; sadly, there are still many people who would face death if they took such an action. How fitting it is that all Muslims are obligated to visit and perform Salat facing Mecca, the epitome of a city of pure intolerance and unrivaled oppression.
